What Motivates Your Team Members

An article in The March 2013 Harvard Business Review has an interesting perspective on hiring assessment tools that actually predict success.

Yes, we have Myers-Briggs and Disc to assess personality but we all know they don’t predict success. Heidi Grant Halvorson and E. Tory Higgins, the authors, suggest two personality types — promotion focus and prevention focus — could be an aid.

Does a team member play to win — promotion focus, or to not lose — prevention focus.

From a Disc perspective you might consider Disc perspectives of dominance and influence in conflict with systematic and compliant.

Marketing personalities are usually promotion focused. Internal production personalities are more typically prevention focused. Such personalities are usually successful but sometimes get in trouble with leadership when they make detail errors (promotion) or creative errors (production).

There is lots here to consider when a staff member is in trouble because of such situations.

Sensitivity in these matters may save a key team member.
