Red Ocean Strategies

W. Chan Kim and Renee Mauborgne, the authors of “Blue Ocean Strategy” have noted how difficult it is for companies involved in red ocean industries, like home building, to break out into the blue ocean. They suggest four “break free” ideas which are applicable in our industry.

Think about new customer segments which might share attributes in common with your current segments.

Are there other means to create these markets without technology or destruction of your current business?

Consider a “value” strategy rather than the typical tradeoffs between quality and price.

The Millennial generation of home buyers are of course different — they also share many attributes with the older generations.
